perhaps a hug, perhaps that brief moment in which two people look at one another and silently assess what four years have done to the person standing in front of them.

They had not expected this.

Alexia pushed back her chair before Adi’ra had quite reached the table.

She was slimmer than they remembered, though not fragile. Quite the opposite. Beneath the dark fabric of her top, her shoulders and arms looked lean and trained, almost sinewy. Her hair fell across one side of her face, and for a fraction of a second Adi’ra registered only details: the fine lines around her eyes, a small crease beside her mouth that had not been there before, and the scent of something warm and faintly woody.

Then Alexia’s arms were around them, decisive and completely unhesitating.

“You damn creature!”

That was all she said before she kissed them.

Not on the cheek, and certainly not cautiously.

Her mouth found Adi’ra’s with the confidence of someone for whom the missing years had been little more than a catastrophic communications failure that had, at last, been repaired.

Adi’ra’s body responded before their mind had managed to classify what was happening.

Warmth, pressure, Alexia’s body against their own, one hand at the back of Adi’ra’s neck.

Something deep inside them loosened even as memories surged upward, unorganized and far too quickly: a sofa, Alexia’s bare shoulder in the light of a monitor, laughter in the dark, an argument, a look held far too long across a kitchen table, skin, and a door that at some point had remained closed.

Four years, Adi’ra thought.

And kissed her back.

It lasted only a few seconds. Perhaps longer.

Time was an exceptionally unreliable instrument in moments like these.

When Alexia finally pulled away, she remained close enough for Adi’ra to feel her breath against their skin.

Her eyes moved over them, not casually, but thoroughly.

“Yes,” Alexia said at last.

Adi’ra raised one eyebrow.

“Yes, what?”

“You’re still you.”

“Was that a matter of serious speculation?”

The corner of Alexia’s mouth twitched.

“With you? Always.”

There it was again, that small pull somewhere between the breastbone and the stomach.

It was not being in love.

Not anymore.

Too much had happened, and too many lives lay between then and now. Some of those lives they had actually lived; others they had only almost lived.

What remained felt softer now, warmer, and perhaps even more stable.

Adi’ra took hold of Alexia’s forearms and squeezed them briefly.

“Hello, Lex.”

For the slightest moment, Alexia’s expression changed.

Then she smiled.

“Hello, Adi’ra.”

Only then did Adi’ra notice that people at two neighboring tables were looking at them.

An older woman immediately returned her attention to her sundae. A man sitting with a child was grinning, while the child appeared considerably more interested in the half-melted chocolate sauce on their plate.

Good.

The world could continue.

Adi’ra sat down, although their legs still seemed unconvinced that the previous twenty minutes were over.

The journey here remained lodged in their nervous system: the crowding, the voices, too many bodies, too many movements occurring at once, the displays on the train, the announcements one after another, and the metallic scream of the wheels through a curve that nobody else seemed to consider particularly loud.

And then there had been that one person who had looked at Adi’ra for much too long.

Perhaps entirely harmless.

Perhaps not.

Their brain had not yet reached a verdict.

Alexia sat down opposite them, and only then did Adi’ra notice what was underneath the table.

Olive drab. Cordura. Laser-cut surfaces.

Tasmanian Tiger.

It was not new. The fabric had faded slightly along some of the edges, there was abrasion on the bottom, and one zipper had a pull loop that was clearly no longer original. Even so, the backpack did not look worn out.

It looked used.

There was a difference.

Adi’ra knew it.

They looked back up.

Alexia had noticed the glance.

Of course she had.

“Later.”

Adi’ra remained silent for a moment.

“I didn’t ask anything.”

“You just asked about seven questions.”

“Without speaking.”

“You were always loud when you were thinking.”

This time the smile came by itself.

“You haven’t changed at all,” Alexia said, leaning back.

“That is an extraordinarily bad lie.”

«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»

Alexia had imagined this moment differently.

Several times, in fact.

On the train, while waiting, and once more when she spotted Adi’ra moving through the crowd outside.

In none of those imagined versions had she stood up and simply kissed them.

It had been stupid and impulsive and, very probably, exactly right.

Four years could change a person. Names could change, bodies could change, clothes, posture, the weight that experience placed across a face.

Some movements remained.

Adi’ra still had that tiny delay whenever something unexpected happened, perhaps half a second in which perception came first, analysis second, and reaction only afterward.

There had been times when it drove Alexia insane.

Today, she had missed it.

She watched Adi’ra scan the room again.

Not conspicuously.

A glance toward the glass frontage, the door, the counter, outside for a moment, and then back to her.

Alexia remembered that too, although it had been less pronounced in the past.

“You’re tense.”

“I just took the subway.”

“That accounts for about half of it.”

Adi’ra looked at her.

There.

Exactly that expression.

Which half? On what basis? Which observation led you to that conclusion?

Alexia nearly laughed.

Instead, she picked up her water glass and drank.

“You’re checking the exits.”

“Occupational habit.”

“You’re sitting with your back to the wall.”

“Coincidence.”

“You identified my backpack in less than five seconds.”

“It’s olive, tactical, and large.”

“And you looked at the door when a vehicle slowed down outside.”

Adi’ra said nothing.

Alexia set down her glass.

“That is what I mean.”

For several seconds, only the sounds of the café remained between them: spoons touching porcelain, overlapping voices, and the steady hum of refrigeration behind the counter. Outside, a delivery vehicle sounded a brief signal before its electric motor disappeared almost silently into the traffic.

The transparent sunshade on the window automatically darkened as the sun emerged between two clouds.

Almost everything looked normal.

That had become one of the problems with normality.

It could look remarkably convincing even while it was already beginning to fall apart.

“Are you all right?” Alexia asked.

Adi’ra opened their mouth.

Alexia raised one finger.

“Not the functional answer.”

Adi’ra closed their mouth again.

Good.

Direct hit.

“Define all right.”

“Asshole.”

“That is not a definition.”

“Adi’ra.”

This time there was no counterattack.

Their eyes dropped to the table.

“I’m functioning.”

“I specifically excluded that answer.”

“Then the answer becomes more complicated.”

“We have time.”

Alexia’s thoughts flickered toward the backpack beneath her feet.

Perhaps they had less time than Adi’ra believed.

But that could wait for another moment.

«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»

The sundae between them had been a bad idea.

Not because of the flavor.

Hazelnut, dark chocolate, vanilla. Traditional. Nothing an algorithmic menu could market as a postmodern interpretation of Alpine dessert culture.

Adi’ra liked traditional things when the world became complicated.

The problem was that they had been holding the same spoon for several minutes without actually using it.

“You’re letting your ice cream die of heatstroke,” Alexia said with a grin.

Adi’ra looked down.

The chocolate around the edge had already begun dissolving into the vanilla.

“Entropy.”

“Eat.”

Adi’ra took a spoonful.

Cold, sugar, hazelnut.

The sensory clarity genuinely helped.

“Better?”

“Marginally.”

“I’ll take marginally.”

Alexia had already eaten almost half of her own sundae.

That, too, felt familiar.

Adi’ra moved the spoon through the softening chocolate.

“Why did you message me?”

Alexia did not answer immediately.

That was unusual.

In the past, she had sometimes begun speaking before other people had finished asking their questions.

“Because I saw your name.”

Adi’ra looked up.

“Where?”

“Somewhere I wasn’t expecting to see it.”

Something tightened inside them, not strongly, but like a thin wire being drawn taut.

“That is impressively imprecise.”

“Deliberately.”

“Leeex.”

“I know.”

Alexia glanced aside.

At the far end of the café, a service robot rolled between two rows of tables, stopped beside a family, and raised its tray by a few inches. The employee behind the counter paid it no attention.

Adi’ra waited.

Eventually Alexia looked back.

“Three days ago, I was looking for someone else.”

“Who?”

“Not important.”

“That usually means important.”

“Not this time.”

Adi’ra let it go.

For now.

“And while you were looking for them, you found me.”

“I found something that led to you.”

That was different.

“What?”

“A data record.”

The thin wire tightened further.

“Public?”

“Not exactly.”

“Government?”

“No.”

“Commercial?”

“No.”

“Lex.”

“Adi’ra,” Alexia murmured, leaning closer, “this is exactly why I didn’t want to ask you about it through any channel.”

Adi’ra’s gaze moved almost automatically toward their own device as they leaned forward as well.

Alexia noticed.

“No.”

“No what?”

“Not here.”

“You’re sitting in an ice cream café in the middle of—”

“Exactly. In public.”

She spoke quietly.

Perfectly calmly.

Adi’ra stopped asking questions.

Out loud, at least.

Inside their head, the questions continued multiplying.

Where could Alexia have obtained the record? What did led to you mean? How unambiguous was the connection? Which identity? Which period? Which systems? Which names?

An old reflex had already begun constructing a complete model from inadequate information.

Adi’ra stopped it.

Not enough data yet.

Alexia watched them.

“You’re doing it again.”

“What?”

“Thirty possibilities at once.”

“More like twelve.”

“Liar.”

Adi’ra did not smile.

“How serious?”

Alexia looked at them for several seconds.

“Serious enough that I haven’t slept at home.”

Adi’ra’s eyes dropped beneath the table again.

This time, the backpack was no longer a backpack.

It was information.

«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»

Alexia had expected this moment.

Not the kiss, but this: the instant Adi’ra understood why the thing beneath the table was there.

Their face barely changed.

Anyone who did not know Adi’ra might have missed it entirely.

Alexia saw it immediately.

Their shoulders became slightly quieter.

Not more relaxed.

Quieter.

That was worse.

Adi’ra was switching modes.

Emotion back.

Analysis forward.

“How long?”

“Two nights.”

“Where?”

“Different places.”

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

“Has anyone followed you?”

“Not that I can say with certainty.”

“You’re unsure?”

Alexia exhaled.

“Same vehicle twice. Different locations.”

“License plate?”

“Different.”

“Then it wasn’t the same vehicle.”

“Same damage on the front right.”

Adi’ra went silent.

“Model?”

Alexia told them.

“Color?”

She answered.

“Time between sightings?”

She answered that too.

Question by question, precise, without panic and without drama.

It was one of the reasons Alexia had contacted Adi’ra in the first place.

It was also one of the reasons she was worried.

They took in the information like components, sorting it, testing it, fitting pieces together.

In the past, some small uncertainty would eventually have followed: a look, a breath, perhaps an actual sentence.

Could still be coincidence.

Alexia waited for it.

It never came.

“We’re going to Glinde,” Adi’ra said.

Alexia blinked.

“What?”

“Not immediately. We stay another few minutes, pay normally, leave normally, and then we go to Glinde.”

There was something there.

Not in the decision itself, which was reasonable enough, but in the speed with which it had arrived.

“Wait.”

Adi’ra looked at her.

“What?”

“You don’t know everything yet.”

“I know enough.”

“No.”

“You haven’t slept at home for two days, and you’re sitting here with a packed backpack.”

“Yes.”

“You believe somebody may be watching you.”

“I consider it possible.”

“You contact me after four years through an indirect route, and you refuse to discuss certain things within reach of electronic devices.”

“Also correct.”

“Then Glinde makes sense.”

“That isn’t my point.”

Adi’ra frowned.

Alexia suddenly remembered exactly what conversations like this had once felt like: two people building a complicated model together while each insisted that their own piece belonged in the center.

“You decided on the answer before you had the remaining data.”

“No.”

The no came too quickly.

Alexia noticed.

“So you did.”

“I made a preliminary decision.”

“You usually call that a hypothesis.”

Silence.

Direct hit.

Adi’ra’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“And?”

“Today you’re calling it a decision.”

For a moment, they looked genuinely unsettled.

Only a little.

Enough.

Alexia placed one hand on the table.

“I’m not saying Glinde is wrong.”

“Then what are you saying?”

“That you sound different.”

Outside, a monorail crossed the intersection. Its signal reached them only faintly through the glass.

Adi’ra looked toward the window.

“Four years.”

“What?”

“You haven’t seen me in four years.”

“And?”

“People change.”

“Of course they do.”

Alexia studied them.

“But not every change is meaningless.”

The sentence remained.

It settled somewhere inside Adi’ra’s mind without immediately finding a category.

They disliked sentences like that.

Not because they were wrong, but because they had a habit of returning later.

Usually at inconvenient times.

Adi’ra finally took another spoonful of the ice cream, which by now had almost completely melted.

“And you?”

Alexia raised her eyebrows.

“What about me?”

“You’re talking about how I’ve changed.”

“Diversion.”

“Entirely correct.”

“At least you’re honest.”

Adi’ra looked at her.

Alexia had changed.

Of course she had.

It was simply more difficult to name the change because old memory and present perception kept overlapping.

Her face had grown softer while her movements had become more precise, and she sat differently now, more fully inside her own body.

There had been moments in the past when Alexia seemed to be constantly reminding herself how much space she was allowed to occupy.

That was gone.

“You seem settled,” Adi’ra said.

Alexia’s expression shifted slightly.

“That is dangerously close to a compliment.”

“I can retract it.”

“Don’t you dare.”

The final words dropped abruptly into a much lower register.

A baritone.

Dry, deep, and almost comically authoritative.

Adi’ra stared at her.

Then the laughter broke loose.

Not polite laughter.

Not controlled laughter.

Real, physical laughter that began somewhere deep in their abdomen.

“You can still do that?”

Alexia grinned, and her voice returned to its usual softer, higher register.

“Certain tools are worth keeping even if you don’t need them very often.”

“Holy shit.”

“I occasionally use it on men who have trouble understanding the word no.”

“That is unfair.”

“That is efficient.”

Adi’ra was still laughing, and for perhaps thirty seconds there was no data record, no mysterious vehicle, no unknown surveillance, and no past that had resurfaced somewhere inside a system.

There was only Alexia, Adi’ra, the ice cream café, and melting chocolate between them.

It hurt how good that felt.

Not painfully.

More like a part of the body suddenly receiving blood again after having been numb for a very long time.

Adi’ra looked at her.

“I missed you.”

This time, Alexia had no clever answer.

She simply looked back.

“I missed you too.”

Nothing more was necessary.

«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»

Alexia would have liked to take Adi’ra’s hand.

She did not.

Some old movements did not need to be repeated automatically merely because the body still remembered them.

The kiss had already been enough.

Perhaps more than enough.

She was still glad she had done it.

For a moment, Adi’ra sitting across from her seemed closer again to the person Alexia remembered.

Then something vibrated.

Not loudly.

Adi’ra’s wristband.

Once.

Their gaze dropped toward it.

Alexia saw their pupils widen almost imperceptibly.

A message appeared on the inside of the narrow display, positioned so that only Adi’ra could read it.

“What?”

Adi’ra did not answer immediately.

“Adi’ra.”

“Nothing.”

“That is probably the second-worst answer you’ve given today, immediately after I’m fine.”

Adi’ra brushed a finger across the display, and the message disappeared.

“System notification.”

“What system?”

“HESAYA.”

Alexia knew the name.

Not the system in its present form, but the name.

“The house?”

“More than that by now.”

“Of course.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“You give a home automation system a name, and twelve years later it’s probably running half a county.”

“Only a very small county.”

Alexia waited.

“What did HESAYA want?”

Adi’ra glanced briefly toward the windows.

“She detected an unusual external request.”

The humor disappeared.

“What kind of request?”

“Still unclear.”

“When?”

“Seven minutes ago.”

Alexia instinctively glanced toward her own device, then stopped herself.

“Coincidence?”

Adi’ra did not answer.

There it was again.

That strange certainty.

Not spoken aloud.

Simply present.

Alexia felt something tighten at the back of her neck.

“We’re going to Glinde,” she said.

Adi’ra looked at her.

A tiny smile appeared.

“That was remarkably quick.”

“Shut up.”

“I would merely like to document—”

“Adi’ra.”

Baritone.

They raised both hands.

“Fine.”

Alexia had to fight a smile.

You damn adorable creature.

«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»

They remained for another eight minutes.

Adi’ra deliberately avoided making the interval exact, not because eight possessed some magical security value, but because standing up immediately after receiving a message would create precisely the kind of correlation they wanted to avoid.

At least, that was what they told themself.

Perhaps it was ridiculous.

Perhaps it was already too late.

Perhaps there was nobody observing their movements at all.

There were nowhere near enough data to calculate the rational probability with any seriousness.

Even so, the pattern felt different now.

Alexia’s data record.

The vehicle.

HESAYA’s alert.

Three points did not yet make a line.

The brain wanted to draw one anyway.

Adi’ra loved and hated that quality in equal measure.

Patterns were both promise and trap.

You could lose yourself inside them, or they could allow you to see something long before anyone else had even noticed that anything was happening.

Adi’ra paid the bill, but not with their wristband.

Naturally, Alexia noticed.

“Since when are you using cards again?”

“Since cards became old-fashioned enough to be interesting.”

“You’re impossible.”

“You were saying that in 2029.”

“And I was right then too.”

Adi’ra returned the card to its place.

The light outside had changed. The sun now stood higher between the buildings, and the café’s automatic sunshade had darkened almost completely.

People moved along the sidewalk outside. A delivery rider pushed a bicycle while two teenagers at a transit stop shared a projected display.

A woman walked a dog.

Normality.

That word again.

Alexia stood.

This time, she reached beneath the table.

The Tasmanian Tiger came up in a single fluid movement.

Adi’ra looked more closely, though not conspicuously.

The backpack was indeed older, well maintained but frequently carried. One side showed slight abrasion, and the shoulder straps had taken on the shape that quality material acquired only after years of use: not worn out, but adapted.

Alexia caught the look.

“No.”

“I still haven’t asked anything.”

“You are not taking it apart here.”

“I had no intention of doing that.”

“You’re thinking about it.”

“Only superficially.”

“Adi’ra.”

“Purely professional interest.”

Alexia slid one arm through a shoulder strap, then the other.

The pack settled close against her back.

Not heavy enough for a complete field setup, Adi’ra noted.

They said nothing.

Later.

Alexia adjusted the straps with two short movements.

“Ready?”

Adi’ra looked across the café one final time.

People, glasses, coffee, ice cream, a service robot, and the familiar hum of the refrigeration system.

A small world carrying on as though there were no reason for two people at one of its tables to have just decided that the next several hours of their lives would bear almost no resemblance to what either of them had planned.

Adi’ra stood.

“No.”

Alexia looked at them.

“What?”

Adi’ra adjusted their jacket.

“I’m not ready.”

Their gaze moved toward the door.

“But we’re going anyway.”

Alexia nodded.

Together, they stepped outside.

The glass door closed behind them.

For several seconds, the darkened window reflected nothing but the street.

Then the café display returned to its daytime menu.

As though nothing had happened.

Adi’ra placed their right hand on Alexia’s shoulder, leaned close to her ear, and murmured:

“Stay liquid.”

Alexia instantly remembered the now rather old SWAT series and knew exactly what Adi’ra meant.
<p style="text-align: reached Adi’ra while they were kneeling between two open equipment boxes.

Batteries in various states of charge, memory modules, camera mounts, cables, and components of the mobile weather station were spread across the office floor. On the HoloWideScreen, the packing list for Sweden occupied almost the entire left half of the display, while weather forecasts, traffic information, and a schematic of the Ranger’s cargo bed filled the space beside it.

Monday, by nine a.m. in the morning, everything had to be checked and packed, preferably in an order that would not leave Adi’ra emptying three boxes again on Sunday evening because some essential piece of equipment had ended up buried at the very bottom.

At home, Adi’ra’s inner we usually worked quietly. Thoughts handed tasks from one to another, memories supplemented checklists, the body reported its limits before strain became a problem, and even unexpected ideas could generally find their place without overturning the entire structure of the day.

The office was a controllable environment, and even the journey ahead still consisted of orderly possibilities.

A message appeared along the upper edge of their glasses.

New message from Alexia.

Adi’ra raised their head and gave a brief nod, distinct enough for the iGlases to recognize the movement.

Do you have time to meet today, by any chance? I’d like to see you in Hamburg. Maybe coffee at Europa Passage. There’s something I want to tell you that I’d rather not put in writing.

Adi’ra read the message a second time.

Alexia had not needed to send a personal message. Close contacts could submit appointment requests directly to Adi’ra’s calendar, and the system would determine which periods were available, how much preparation time different kinds of meetings required, and which tasks could safely be moved without disrupting sleep, health, travel preparations, or necessary recovery periods.

Alexia was one of the people for whom the calendar would search even for short-notice openings.

She knew that.

She also knew why the system existed.

For Adi’ra, a spontaneous meeting did not consist solely of the meeting itself. It meant a new route, different clothes, additional sensory input, a disruption to the expected sequence of the day, and a social situation whose content they had no opportunity to prepare for.

That last uncertainty immediately began filling itself with possibilities.

What was it that Alexia did not want to write down?

Was it something connected to her work with the European climate NGO — internal data, political pressure, a conflict within the Hamburg office — or something that had nothing to do with the organization at all?

Perhaps it was personal.

That possibility was no more reassuring than any of the others.

“HESAYA.”

“I’m listening.”

“Check four o’clock today. Two hours.”

The packing list shrank while the calendar opened beside it.

“Four to six p.m. is available. The scheduled review of international news channels would move to this evening. Preparations for departure on Monday at nine a.m. would remain within the planned time window.”

Normally, the hottest hours of the day belonged to news analysis. When physical work outside became unnecessarily exhausting, Adi’ra moved through international channels instead, comparing reports, satellite imagery, climate data, and political reactions from Europe, Russia, North America, the Middle East, and the coastal regions of Africa.

Not everything mattered immediately, but most major developments announced themselves long before anyone finally gave them a headline.

Moving those hours was acceptable.

For Alexia, certainly.

“Reserve the time.”

“What reason should I enter for the appointment?”

Adi’ra looked at the message again.

Alexia had said nothing more, and for the moment there was no reason HESAYA needed to know anything more either.

“Meeting an old friend.”

The new entry appeared.

4:00–6:00 p.m.
Meeting an old friend
Europa Passage, Hamburg

“Would you like me to send confirmation?”

“Write: Works for me. I’ll be there at four.”

The message went out.

Within seconds, the calendar had reorganized the rest of the day. One equipment inspection moved forward, the checks on two cameras shifted into the evening, and the international news block began later.

Organizationally, the matter was settled.

Adi’ra’s mind was less willing to accept that conclusion.

They had known Alexia since 2023. Seventeen years had passed since their first meeting, including four years during which neither had known anything about the other.

Alexia now worked as an independent contractor for the climate NGO.

But that was not all she was.

An old laugh surfaced, along with the edge of a table, a hand wrapped around a coffee cup, and a conversation that had gone on far longer than either of them had intended. Before any of it could become a complete memory, Adi’ra returned their attention to the equipment boxes.

There were just under three hours left before they needed to leave.

The next battery was waiting.

»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«

3:12 p.m.

Inside the Ranger, the world grew quiet again.

The climate system kept the cabin cool enough that Adi’ra’s body no longer objected to every movement, the windows filtered part of the glaring sunlight, and the route to Oststeinbek ran across the display as a clean, uncomplicated line.

The engine, the airflow, the navigation prompts — everything had an identifiable cause, a fixed location, and a volume that could be adjusted.

Their thoughts, too, found room to exist beside one another again. The route occupied the foreground, the schedule sat behind it, and Alexia’s message remained somewhere in between, occasionally rising back to the surface.

Over the past several years, central Hamburg had been closed to private motor traffic step by step. Delivery services, emergency vehicles, residents, and a limited number of approved occupational groups could still enter, but Adi’ra had no permit that would justify driving into the city center for a private meeting at Europa Passage.

By now, the U2 line began at the shopping center in Oststeinbek. A large park-and-ride facility had been built above the station precisely for this transition: drive your own vehicle to the edge of the dense urban zone, then continue through Hamburg on public transit.

Adi’ra found an open space beneath a roof of solar panels in the third row and shut off the engine.

The climate system fell silent.

For a moment, the cooler air remained suspended inside the cabin.

Then Adi’ra opened the door, and the heat pushed into the Ranger as though it had been waiting outside for exactly that opening. The conditioned air spilled away, dry warmth swept across their face, arms, and neck, while a second wave of heat rose from the asphalt below.

It was early April, yet above the parked vehicles the air already shimmered like a July afternoon. The parking lot smelled of warm rubber, dust, heated plastic, and the almost imperceptible electrical hum of the charging stations.

Adi’ra climbed out.

Within a few steps, moisture began gathering beneath their thin shirt. Where gaps opened between the solar roofs, the sun struck the pavement with an almost white intensity, reflecting from windows and pale bodywork and forcing their eyes to adjust again and again.

The IFAK moved against their left hip with every step.

Inside the Ranger, Adi’ra had barely noticed it. Out here, the pouch pressed against the belt, rubbed lightly against skin already warmed by the heat, and shifted a little more weight onto the left side.

It stayed there anyway.

Carrying the IFAK on public transportation had long since become routine, not because Adi’ra expected catastrophe on every journey, but because three minutes could become a very long time when someone was bleeding heavily and everyone nearby carried nothing more useful than supplies for a minor cut.

The pressure against their hip was irritating.

It was also reassuring: familiar weight, familiar position, familiar sequence.

Adi’ra locked the Ranger, checked the confirmation on the glasses display, and headed toward the station entrance.

The distance was only a few hundred yards, barely worth mentioning on a map, but the body kept a different ledger. Direct sunlight, heated pavement, almost no wind, the pouch at their belt, and Alexia’s still-unexplained message had already combined into the first layer of accumulated strain.

As the escalator descended, the light became duller. The sky disappeared behind concrete, and although the air was not genuinely cooler, it was at least no longer being heated directly by the sun.

In exchange, everything else moved closer.

Footsteps, voices, electronic signals, rolling suitcases, and a station announcement whose first half vanished into the reverberation of the space while the second emerged much too loudly from a speaker directly above the escalator.

On the platform, two teenagers were dictating personal messages into their devices. Both spoke as though they were trying to overcome the noise of a construction site, even though their microphones were only inches from their mouths.

“No, I told you I was going to be later—”

“You just have to tell her that—”

Farther down the platform, a group was discussing several subjects at once. Someone laughed while another person began a new story before the previous one had finished.

The display showed the U2 arriving in three minutes.

An advertising wall shifted from a calm blue to an aggressive orange, while an approaching bus line briefly appeared along the upper edge of Adi’ra’s glasses even though it had nothing to do with their route.

Alexia’s sentence returned.

I’d rather not put it in writing.

Two minutes.

Adi’ra noticed that their gaze kept moving between the arrival display, the advertising wall, and the teenagers, even though only one of those things contained information they actually needed.

The train announced itself first as a current of air, then as a metallic rumble from the tunnel, and finally as the U2 swept into the station beneath the shriek of its brakes.

The sound drove itself behind Adi’ra’s eyes.

Their jaw tightened, their shoulders rose, and pain flashed through the sensory overload as metal scraped against metal and the station walls multiplied the sound.

Then the train came to a stop.

The doors opened, releasing warm air and the smell of bodies from inside the car as people simultaneously tried to leave and enter. Several passengers stepped out only to stop immediately in front of the doors while deciding where to go. Others began pushing into the available gaps, changed direction after two steps, and blocked everyone behind them.

Adi’ra waited.

Only after the first uncoordinated knot had loosened did they step aboard.

A seat was free against the side wall, close enough to the door that they would not need to cross the entire car later. Adi’ra sat down and pulled the IFAK slightly forward until it no longer pressed quite so hard between their hip and the edge of the seat.

The doors began to close.

At the last possible moment, an older person entered, stopped in front of the opposite seat, and laboriously turned around with their back facing the direction of travel. One hand reached for the vertical pole, missed it, corrected, and still failed to find a secure grip.

Adi’ra planted both feet more firmly on the floor.

The train started moving.

The jolt came sooner than the person expected. Their upper body pitched forward and one hand reached again for the pole, finding only empty air.

Too close.

Adi’ra raised both arms.

For an instant, it looked as though the person was about to fall directly into their lap. Then their fingers finally caught the pole, their body turned halfway around, and they dropped heavily into the seat.

“Goddamn it.”

The person adjusted their jacket and exhaled audibly.

“You all right?” Adi’ra asked.

“Yeah. Thing takes off like it’s out of its damn mind.”

Adi’ra only nodded.

The train had not accelerated unusually quickly. It simply had not waited for every human being aboard to finish making their decisions.

There had been no fall and there was no obvious injury. The person’s hand moved normally and their gaze remained clear.

Nothing further required attention.

Across the aisle, a teenager opened a video with the sound enabled. Somewhere behind Adi’ra, someone began dictating another message, while a child’s game repeated a sequence of electronic melodies beside two adults whose conversation became louder with every station.

The train crossed a switch with a heavy impact that traveled through the floor, the seat, and the backrest. Faces, displays, strips of light, and movements taking place behind Adi’ra appeared in the windows as reflections and therefore remained inside their field of vision anyway.

The audio filters in the iGlases softened the sharpest frequencies, but Adi’ra did not want to block out the environment completely.

The SavingLife symbol remained active along the top edge of the display.

There was no alert, only readiness.

Adi’ra looked at it anyway.

Please, not today.

Not in this car, not in the middle of a tunnel, and not at some station where the planned journey would suddenly end and an entirely different one would begin.

During the unusually hot weeks, Hamburg’s subway and commuter rail systems had developed an increasingly poor reputation: circulatory problems, failing cooling systems, overcrowded cars, aggression, and people losing control under the combined effects of heat, noise, drugs, anxiety, or private stress.

Not every incident became an emergency.

Some required only a few seconds to become one.

SavingLife did not notify Adi’ra of every confrontation, but in cases involving unconsciousness, serious falls, major bleeding, or certain kinds of violence, their profile could appear very high on the responder list.

Wanting an uninterrupted trip felt both legitimate and shameful at the same time.

Alexia was waiting.

If someone needed help, the meeting would have to wait instead.

Even so, Adi’ra hoped it would not happen today.

The train braked at the next station, and once again the shriek traveled through the car. Several passengers stood before the train had come to a complete stop, reached too late for the poles, and collided with one another.

“Shit, hold on—”

A bag struck the back of a seat.

The doors opened. Some people left, others entered, and within seconds the same train car contained an entirely new collection of voices, smells, and patterns of movement.

A woman pushed a stroller inside while speaking to someone through her display. Directly in front of the child, a small screen flashed rapidly through bright colors while some animated figure jumped across orange surfaces, accompanied by pulses of light that demanded attention even from the edge of Adi’ra’s vision.

The video was not intended for them.

Their brain reached for it anyway.

What was being shown? Why were the cuts so fast? How many stations remained? Alexia. The woman was still talking. Someone behind her wanted to pass. The stroller was partly blocking the doorway.

The U2 display changed.

The doors closed.

As the car grew more crowded, the cooperation between Adi’ra’s thoughts became less orderly. At home, they handed tasks to one another.

Here, they all called out at once.

The next stops, the voice behind them, the display on the stroller, the pressure of the IFAK, the older passenger across the aisle, Alexia’s message, SavingLife — everything arrived, while almost nothing departed completely.

Then the train emerged from the tunnel.

The change in light was so abrupt that Adi’ra had to blink. Sunlight poured directly through the windows, laying bright rectangles across faces, jackets, and displays. For several seconds, the glass stopped reflecting mainly the interior and opened instead onto tracks, bridges, buildings, and an April sun so intense it appeared nearly white.

The sound changed as well.

Inside the tunnel, the clatter had possessed walls. It had been reflected back upon itself, dense and enclosed, as though the train were moving through the body of a resonating instrument.

Outside, the sound opened up. It did not become quieter, only broader. Wind moved along the exterior of the train, the running gear sounded harder against the exposed rails, and beneath a bridge a deep rumble gathered for several seconds before dissolving again.

Sunlight struck Adi’ra’s face and warmed their skin through the window.

Buildings passed.

A construction site.

A bird above the tracks.

Reflections from glass façades.

Alexia, 2023.

A conversation that had continued far beyond the time originally set aside for it. Her way of listening without immediately trying to fill every silence. A late evening, light falling across a table, and a sentence whose precise wording had vanished while its meaning remained.

Then four years.

There had been no clean line of separation, only a stretch of time across which both lives had continued without touching.

Adi’ra tried to hold onto one of those images.

The train entered another tunnel.

The windows became mirrors, the interior of the car settled over the memory, and the screech of the next curve cut straight through it.

»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«

At Jungfernstieg, Adi’ra stepped out with the rest of the flow of passengers.

The journey was not over. It had merely changed form again.

The platform lay deep beneath the city, tiled and artificially lit, filled with the warm currents of air that departing trains pushed through the station. The rumble of the U2 receded into the tunnel, yet for several seconds it remained behind as a vibration in the floor and in Adi’ra’s body.

The crowd moved toward the escalator.

Adi’ra moved with it.

Walking too slowly meant that people behind them closed the distance and came uncomfortably near. Walking too quickly almost inevitably ended in sudden braking because someone ahead stopped, changed direction, or looked at a display while continuing to walk.

On the intermediate level, the directed flow dissolved completely.

People emerged from several corridors at once, crossing paths, stopping, turning around, or moving from one side to the other without giving any visible indication of where they intended to go. To Adi’ra’s perception, they behaved like traffic cones capable of changing position on their own the instant a clear route appeared.

A gap opened on the left.

The person ahead moved left as well.

Then right.

A man stopped in the middle of that path and began operating his display.

More people were approaching from behind.

Adi’ra took two quick steps sideways, slowed, pulled one shoulder back to avoid a shopping bag moving into their path, and accelerated again.

They needed to walk more slowly, except that doing so meant someone would close in from behind.

Pass on the left.

Stroller.

Right.

Too late.

Slow down again.

Adi’ra became aware that they were walking more and more hurriedly even though the hurry itself was making further mistakes more likely.

A display flashed in front of the child in the stroller. Animated figures moved through a scene that made no sense in passing, leaving behind only contrast, color, and rapid motion.

The stroller was long gone before the flicker disappeared from Adi’ra’s mind.

Warm pastry, sugar, and reheated cheese drifted from a bakery shop. A few yards farther on, those smells mixed with beer, old frying oil, and cleaning products from a pub. People streamed past, some having only just escaped the heat outside, others clearly having been traveling for some time, carrying with them damp fabric, sweat, and the smell of unwashed skin.

Around one group, an intense combination of garlic and spices dominated everything else. The smell did not seem to remain in Adi’ra’s nose; it settled onto their tongue.

They held their breath, realized they were doing it, and began breathing more shallowly through their mouth instead.

The density of odors is temporarily elevated, the internal press office announced.

It was an absurdly clinical sentence.

It helped anyway, because at least it gave the sensation a boundary.

A person leaned against the tiled wall with their eyes half closed, head hanging forward and arms barely moving. Several yards away, someone else swayed so slowly that every shift in body weight appeared to require a fresh decision.

Adi’ra avoided looking directly at either of them while still checking.

Was the first person standing securely? Was their chest moving regularly? Did they respond to the people passing close by?

Please, not now.

The thought arrived before any more decent version of it could replace it.

Please don’t collapse right in front of me.

If it happened, Adi’ra would help. There was no question about that. Within seconds, the walk to coffee would become an incident: responsiveness, breathing, exact location, emergency channel, bystanders, IFAK.

Alexia would have to wait.

The person against the wall raised their head, rubbed a hand across their face, and shifted their weight onto both feet.

Good.

Adi’ra continued.

The next escalator led upward toward Europa Passage, and within the first few steps the air began to change. The heat of the station receded below them while cooler air, coffee, baked goods, fruit, perfume, and cleaning products drifted down from above.

The lower level of the shopping center was even more crowded.

Here, people were not merely hurrying between forms of transportation. They carried bags, held children by the hand, pushed strollers, or stopped in front of store displays. Some moved with clear purpose.

Others seemed to begin deciding where they wanted to go only after they had already started walking.

Someone pushed a stroller out of a shop doorway into the passage and did not look up until Adi’ra was already changing course to avoid it. Immediately afterward, a person carrying two heavy bags crossed to the opposite side, while a child slipped free of an adult’s hand and took three steps backward.

Adi’ra changed direction again.

By now, their attention registered movement more readily than faces: feet, shoulders, the turning of a torso, a hand beginning to indicate a direction before the rest of the body followed.

At their left hip, the IFAK pressed against the belt. With every quicker step, its weight recalled earlier SavingLife alerts in and around the shopping center — falls, fainting episodes, cuts, and confrontations that had transformed an ordinary shopping trip into something entirely different within seconds.

Adi’ra reached the next escalator.

The ice cream café was two floors above.

Alexia had not given a more precise meeting point, nor had she needed to. They had met there before; the calendar knew the location, and so did HESAYA.

As the escalator carried Adi’ra upward, the space around them opened. Voices from several levels overlapped, dishes clattered, and music from different stores collided without any shared rhythm. a.m.

The office smelled of warm wood, stale coffee, and a spring that had decided far too early to feel like summer.

Adi’ra had opened the east-facing window even though HESAYA had already pointed out that morning that the temperature outside had risen above the temperature indoors. No cooling breeze came through the narrow opening, only dry air, the scent of blossoms, and the fine yellowish dust that had been collecting on the windowsills for the past two days.

Somewhere in the garden, a bumblebee hummed.

It was early April.

HESAYA had identified the insect on its first pass and automatically logged the observation in Adi’ra’s climate journal. Not because a single bumblebee proved anything; individual observations almost never did.

Patterns emerged through repetition: the same plant in the same place, viewed from the same angle, on a date revisited every two years — and the question of what, the next time around, was no longer the way it had been before.

Across the center of the HoloWideScreen, the route north stretched out as a thin line of light.

Glinde. Denmark. Malmö. Several comparison sites across Skåne and Småland, then the west coast, Gothenburg, farther north, and eventually Oslo.

Individual markers glowed green, yellow, or red. Green indicated places that, at least on the surface, had changed very little since the first systematic journey. Yellow marked shifts whose causes were not yet clear enough to interpret with confidence. Red identified sites where comparison under the same conditions was no longer possible.

One of the old overnight stops still existed, but it could no longer be used that way. After repeated spring flooding, the area had been closed; part of the shoreline had collapsed, while the rest was now bordered by low barriers and markers protecting the vegetation.

Another site had since been paved and fitted with charging stations.

At a third, vehicles were already packed close together in April where, back in 2032, Adi’ra had spent the night alone among bare birch trees.

They drove the full comparison route every two years. The 2040 journey would be the fifth documented run.

During the years in between, HESAYA collected measurements, satellite imagery, municipal environmental reports, webcam footage, and messages from people Adi’ra stayed in contact with along the route. But none of those data could capture everything. They could not tell you how a morning on the shore of Lake Vättern felt against your skin, whether a forest smelled of damp moss or already of dry resin, whether frogs still called at night, or whether someone casually remarked in the middle of a conversation:

“This used to happen here at the end of May.”

Adi’ra enlarged the first Swedish comparison site. Four images of the same lakeshore opened side by side.

In 2034, the sky had been gray, the branches bare, with a narrow strip of granular snow lingering in the shadow of the rocks. In 2036, the snow was gone, but puddles remained frozen and the grass was brown. In 2038, the first green shoots had appeared between the stones.

The current station camera already showed young leaves on the birches.

Adi’ra tilted their head slightly.

“That’s more than just an early start to the growing season.”

“Yes,” HESAYA replied. “The local accumulated temperature for this point in the season is eighteen percent above the 2028-to-2037 reference average.”

“And the nights?”

“Still cool enough to reduce the heat load. Unlike Glinde.”

On the right side of the screen, northern Germany lay beneath a field of orange and deep red. Temperatures between seventy-nine and ninety degrees Fahrenheit — twenty-six to thirty-two Celsius — were forecast for the coming week, not as a single spike but as a sustained run of hot days.

Oslo was yellow: far too warm for April, but still not as warm as here.

Adi’ra picked up the mug. The coffee had gone lukewarm and bitter, but they drank it anyway.

Kasandra’s voice drifted up from downstairs, just a few indistinct words followed by the clink of a cup and a brief laugh. At almost the same moment, HESAYA lowered the exterior shade by eight percent.

Human life and machine care, layered together without either canceling out the other.

“We leave Monday,” Adi’ra said.

The route brightened for a moment.

“That is consistent with the existing planning window. You could use the weekend for vehicle preparation, equipment checks, and loading.”

“Exactly.”

“Would you like me to update reservation options along the route?”

“Only as backups. I don’t want a fixed chain of campgrounds.”

“The Ranger is equipped for self-sufficient overnight stays.”

“Exactly.”

Adi’ra shifted the map slightly to the left and opened the equipment list from the previous trip beside it: camera units, drone modules, environmental sensors, mobile weather station, batteries, backup storage, personal medication, rooftop-tent equipment, cooking system, water, tools, recovery gear, vehicle first-aid kit, general travel medical kit, and trauma IFAK.

At that last entry, HESAYA paused.

It was not long enough to qualify as silence, but over the years Adi’ra had learned to recognize those tiny processing delays — that half second in which HESAYA was not waiting for an answer but sorting relationships between pieces of information.

“The current configuration differs from the equipment carried on the 2038 comparison trip,” HESAYA said.

“It should.”

“Two items have been replaced and four added. The external labeling has changed, and there is now a secondary access layer intended for outside responders.”

“That’s intentional too.”

“I compared the equipment lists with your current training materials and the recommendations for civilian trauma equipment.”

Adi’ra set down the mug. The office was quiet enough for them to hear the faint hum of the projection unit.

Then HESAYA said, “I also found an older article in your archive that is relevant to this configuration.”

Adi’ra kept their eyes on the equipment list.

“How old?”

“Published July 26, 2026.”

Fourteen years.

The number never appeared on the display, yet somehow it entered the room anyway.

“Title?”

A narrow text panel opened on the right side of the screen. Then the words appeared:

The First Three Minutes Belong to Us

Below them:

Why Berlin Makes Me Even More Determined to Attend Hamburg Pride — and Why We Need First Responder Plus Courses

Adi’ra read the headline twice, not because they had failed to understand it the first time. The sentences did not feel foreign, but neither did they feel like an ordinary memory. They felt more like an old direction of thought — a path their mind recognized immediately even though the trail markers were gone.

HESAYA continued.

“The file is part of a legacy archive imported into your personal records after your return from Moldova. Its provenance before that point falls outside the biographical scope you have authorized me to access.”

Adi’ra’s right hand moved, but not toward the display or the coffee. Instead, two fingers settled on the folded webbing of the black tourniquet beside the open equipment case.

Its rough surface felt familiar — too familiar to require thought.

“The byline identifies the author as Ike Aaren Hadler,” HESAYA added. “That identity is not linked to you within the portion of your biographical graph available to me.”

Only now did the press office inside Adi’ra’s head begin searching for a neutral response.

Their body had reacted long before it.

Their hand was already resting on the tourniquet, their attention had narrowed, and their breathing had become shallower. One part of them already knew there would be no explanation. Another was still searching for one that would neither lie nor reveal anything.

Once again, the inner we had moved faster than the conscious I.

“That stays the way it is for now,” Adi’ra said.

“Understood.”

There was no follow-up question and no demand for completeness, only the recognition of a boundary and its acceptance.

“Open the full article on the right side of the display,” Adi’ra said. “Then summarize it for me. What still applies to the Sweden trip?”

HESAYA paused briefly.

“You are not answering the question of its origin.”

“No.”

“Then I’ll work with what I have.”

The article unfolded across the right half of the HoloWideScreen: cover image, subheadings, long paragraphs. It came from a time when a First Responder Plus course had not yet been an established form of training, but a demand that such training should exist.

HESAYA did not read the article aloud word for word. Instead, she organized it, compressed it, and exposed the structure of its argument.

“The article connects an attack surrounding Berlin Pride in 2026 with the question of civilian capability during the first minutes of a serious incident. It argues against queer people withdrawing from public space and in favor of distributing practical emergency-care skills more widely.”

Adi’ra listened while reading at the same time, though not every word. Certain sentences seemed to rise from the text as if they had been waiting for their eyes.

The first three minutes belong to us.

The person who happened to be closest.

All they did was keep the minutes before professional care arrived from remaining empty.

“The article proposes two separate levels of training,” HESAYA continued. “Regular general first-aid refreshers for adults, and a voluntary advanced course with a strong practical component.”

A passage about massive bleeding appeared on the display: tourniquets, wound packing, pressure dressings, reassessment.

Adi’ra’s fingers were still resting on the black webbing. The plastic windlass felt cool beneath them.

For a moment, the office table disappeared.

There was wet concrete instead, a stairwell with no glass left in its windows, dust in the air and diesel drifting in from the street. There was a metallic smell that did not come from the railing, and a hand slipping against a blood-soaked dressing.

“Don’t lift it to look,” Adi’ra heard their own voice say, calm to the point of sounding almost unnatural. “Put more material on top. Don’t remove anything. Keep pressing.”

Then the image was gone, and the office returned: warmed wood, bitter coffee, the edge of light from the HoloScreen.

HESAYA had continued speaking.

“The article recommends that these skills not be practiced exclusively in quiet classroom conditions. It specifically mentions controlled noise, reduced lighting, time pressure, confined spaces, and disruptive bystanders.”

Adi’ra exhaled slowly.

Closed curtains. A darkened room. Bass from four speakers, loud enough that instructions could no longer travel effortlessly across the space. Twelve people on the floor among training mannequins and open bags, while red fluid began flowing again from a wound they had already treated.

“Stop!” someone shouted.

Adi’ra shook their head.

“Don’t stop. The wound is bleeding again.”

“But we already treated it.”

“Then figure out why your treatment isn’t working anymore.”

Someone swore. Another person reached for the second tourniquet.

Later, over coffee, Adi’ra’s hands had trembled — not during the scenario, only afterward.

“Adi’ra?”

HESAYA’s voice had grown quieter. Not humanly concerned, exactly, but no longer merely technical either.

“I’m listening.”

“Your heart rate has increased.”

“I’m aware.”

“You have been checking the same tourniquet for fifty-one seconds.”

Adi’ra looked down at their hand and realized their thumb had indeed been running repeatedly over the same edge of the hook-and-loop closure.

The press office still had no explanation.

The body had already filed its report.

“Would you like me to pause?” HESAYA asked.

“No.”

“Would you like me to disable biometric monitoring?”

“No to that too.”

On the right-hand display was a passage about a fictional woman named Nora. She was not a paramedic or a firefighter, just an ordinary visitor at a summer festival. Her hands were shaking, but she knew what had to happen first.

Adi’ra scrolled slowly.

“The article assumes,” HESAYA said, “that individual inquiries to aid organizations may initially result in personal guidance. If demand increases, those inquiries could develop into workshops and structured courses.”

“Could,” Adi’ra repeated.

From the vantage point of 2040, the word sounded almost touchingly cautious.

HESAYA noticed the emphasis.

“Comparable training models were subsequently introduced, initially at the regional level and under different names. Since the reforms to civilian emergency preparedness, advanced bleeding-control modules have been standardized in several European countries.”

“I know.”

“The article did not cause that development by itself.”

“It doesn’t claim that it did.”

“No.”

An email template appeared on the display. It encouraged people to contact the German Red Cross, the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, Johanniter, Malteser, or their local fire department rather than waiting for someone above them to design a new system.

Make the demand visible.

Start somewhere.

Adi’ra leaned back, and the chair yielded almost imperceptibly beneath them.

What came back first was not statistics, course enrollment figures, or political decisions.

It was hands.

Ordinary hands: hands wearing wedding rings, hands with torn fingernails, hands that had been carrying grocery bags, gripping steering wheels, holding cameras or coffee mugs — and then, suddenly, pressing down on a wound.

Perhaps it was the same pattern at a different scale.

Inside a person, perception, fear, embodied knowledge, memory, analysis, and action were distributed across multiple voices and systems. Outside the body, those same functions could be distributed across multiple people.

One person noticed. Another called for help. Someone applied pressure while someone else reassessed, kept the injured person warm, or simply stayed in place even after their arms began to ache.

For a few minutes, strangers became a shared organism — not a harmonious whole and not a merged identity, but a functional we.

During those first three minutes, an isolated I was not enough.

A rain-soaked road appeared in Adi’ra’s mind. Hazard lights reflected in the dark pavement, and a van stood sideways across the roadway with its front end crushed and one door hanging open.

Adi’ra was kneeling beside an injured person when a man in a thin gray jacket appeared next to them, too close and moving too fast.

“Back up,” Adi’ra said.

“I can help.”

“What training do you have?”

“First Responder Plus. Two years ago.”

The man nodded too quickly, perhaps out of fear, perhaps because he understood why that one question had just made everything simpler.

Adi’ra looked at his face once. That was enough.

“Then get over here. Both hands on the dressings. If they soak through, don’t lift them — add more material on top. If you start getting tired, tell me before you lose pressure.”

The man knelt down. He was neither confident nor heroic, but his hands already understood what Adi’ra meant.

That allowed them to move on to the next casualty.

Another fragment surfaced: cold morning air and a damaged building. A woman in an orange work jacket knelt beside a young man. The tourniquet was not elegant, but it was high enough and tight enough.

“Application time?” Adi’ra asked.

“Six fourteen.”

“Bleeding?”

“Stopped.”

“Reassessed?”

“Twice.”

Adi’ra checked it with a glance and a movement of one hand, then continued on. There was no need for explanations among the dust, debris, and sirens, no improvised lesson in the fundamentals. The woman already understood why the tourniquet hurt and why that did not mean it should be loosened.

Then another image came: a demonstration, signs scattered across the ground, a broken privacy barrier, and people moving in two directions at once.

Adi’ra felt the pressure of a flat holster beneath their jacket and, for a moment, their hand moved near it — not onto it, merely close enough to acknowledge the possibility.

Then came a scream from the left.

An injured person was lying behind a temporary barrier.

Adi’ra moved against the flow of the crowd and dropped to the ground.

“Who here has the Plus course?”

Two hands went up, one immediately and the other after a moment’s hesitation.

“You stay with him and check for additional bleeding. You, take care of keeping him warm. I’ll be back.”

Adi’ra had come back later.

How much later remained missing from the fragment.

Before the courses existed, a crowd often meant twenty potential helpers and twenty additional tasks. Later, there might be two or three people among them for whom a single instruction was enough:

Keep the pressure on. Watch the breathing. Reassess the tourniquet.

Adi’ra no longer needed to have hands everywhere at once.

Perhaps that was the most practical form of we: many limited capabilities that, together, could accomplish more than even the most experienced individual could alone.

HESAYA had stopped speaking. The article remained open.

“You aren’t comparing the article only to the travel equipment,” she said.

It was not a question.

Adi’ra took their hand off the tourniquet. For a moment, the pattern of the webbing remained imprinted on their skin.

“No.”

“To later deployments?”

Adi’ra fixed their eyes on the small pulsing marker at the bottom of the display.

HESAYA had no face, yet somehow it was still possible to avoid looking at her.

“To what came out of it.”

“You have repeatedly incorporated civilian first responders into complex incidents.”

“Yes.”

“Your reports contain references to that, often without detailed descriptions of the events themselves.”

“That was intentional.”

HESAYA fell silent.

She knew the boundaries, even if she did not understand all of them. Some information lay outside her archives; other material was encrypted. Certain deployments existed only as gaps in the timeline, bordered by medical supply records, anonymized training logs, and journeys whose official explanations did not account for every movement.

After returning from Moldova, Adi’ra had promised not to disclose certain things.

That promise applied not only to people. It also applied to an AI designed to protect their life and therefore inclined to close every gap it could find.

“The article was too optimistic about one thing,” Adi’ra said.

“What was that?”

“It assumed that enough demand would almost automatically produce good courses.”

“That was not true everywhere.”

“No.”

Some programs had been too short or too theoretical, more product demonstration than training for action. Some had shown participants a tourniquet without taking away their fear of tightening it enough to work. Others practiced wound packing on clean models in brightly lit rooms and treated reassessment as an afterthought. In still others, participants left after four hours convinced they had learned something without ever having been forced to find the equipment they needed in the dark.

But the good courses had changed something.

Not everywhere, not completely, and not quickly enough — but often enough.

“Standards came later,” Adi’ra said. “Minimum training times, instructor qualifications, assessment scenarios, requirements for equipment and reassessment.”

“You contributed to training programs yourself.”

“Yes.”

“Several reports explicitly mention improved integration of civilian responders.”

Adi’ra nodded.

“Because you didn’t have to spend the first five minutes explaining what massive bleeding looks like.”

Their eyes returned to Nora, the fictional woman from the old article.

“You could ask, ‘Plus course?’ If the answer was yes, you had at least a rough idea of what you could ask that person to do.”

“That reduced the burden on professional responders.”

“More importantly, it created time.”

Adi’ra stood. The long stretch of sitting had trapped heat against their back, so they pulled the thin shirt away from their skin and walked to the open window.

Outside, the yard lay under the hard white light of April. The Ranger stood sideways beneath the carport, dark paint, wide tires, the closed rooftop tent mounted behind the cab. From up here, it looked like little more than a flat black outline, inconspicuous unless you knew how much space was hidden inside.

Heat was already shimmering above the wall across the yard.

“Several points from the article remain relevant to the current trip,” HESAYA said.

“Which ones?”

“Keeping the general first-aid supplies, trauma IFAK, and personal travel medications clearly separated. Immediate access to two tourniquets. Labeling that outside responders can understand. And ensuring that the equipment remains accessible even if you are unable to act.”

Adi’ra turned halfway toward the display.

“And instructions?”

“With sufficient connectivity, I can provide audio and visual guidance.”

“With sufficient connectivity.”

“Local emergency protocols are also available.”

“Not completely.”

“No.”

Adi’ra returned to the table, picked up the IFAK, and opened the zipper.

Hook-and-loop fasteners, nylon, sealed packages: the disciplined order of a system that, at the moment it mattered, could not afford to require interpretation.

The first tourniquet sat on the left, the second on the right, followed by compressed gauze, a pressure dressing, chest seal, marker, shears, gloves, and an emergency blanket. Everything had its fixed place, not because Adi’ra would otherwise fail to find it, but because someone else might be the one opening the bag — someone with a course, someone who was frightened, someone whose hands nevertheless knew what needed to happen first.

“The external label needs to be larger,” Adi’ra said.

HESAYA opened a schematic view of the bag.

“What designation?”

Not specialized medical equipment. Not TECC. Not some term that demonstrated expertise while costing precious time when it mattered.

“TRAUMA. Large, bright lettering on both sides.”

“Additional pictogram?”

“Bleeding control and breathing. Simple enough to recognize in poor light.”

“I’ll prepare three designs.”

Adi’ra removed the vehicle first-aid kit from the second box. It would remain intact, with the trauma IFAK positioned beside it — not underneath it, not buried among tools, recovery straps, and spare parts, but accessible both from the side and from inside the vehicle.

“If I’m unresponsive,” Adi’ra said, “someone needs to be able to find the equipment without unloading the truck bed first.”

“I’ll add the access points to the vehicle emergency profile.”

“And mark them on the inside of both doors.”

“External labeling could also advertise the presence of valuable equipment.”

Adi’ra looked up.

HESAYA was right.

As usual, the best solution was not maximum visibility but layered visibility: obvious to people who knew what they were looking for without becoming an invitation to everyone passing an unattended campsite.

“Then inside both doors and digitally in the emergency profile.”

“Done.”

On the right side of the display, the article had reached its end. The final lines appeared against a darker background.

We should go.

We should remain visible.

We should start becoming better able to help one another.

Maybe that begins Monday, with a single phone call.

Adi’ra read the final sentence.

Monday.

Back then, it had been a call to action: make the call, ask the question, make the demand visible.

Fourteen years later, course standards existed in European training databases. Bleeding-control kits hung beside AEDs in train stations. Major event organizers were required to keep advanced medical supplies available, and civilian vehicles carried standardized information in their digital emergency profiles.

None of it was universal, sufficient, or always properly maintained.

But it existed.

And in Adi’ra’s memories, people knelt on streets, in halls, and among rubble with hands that were no longer entirely unprepared.

“The article wasn’t ahead of its time,” Adi’ra said.

“What do you mean?”

They removed the second tourniquet, checked its packaging, hook-and-loop closure, and windlass, then returned it to its fixed position.

“The time had already come. The training just wasn’t there yet.”

HESAYA did not answer immediately.

On the center screen, the weather forecast continued to move. Glinde remained dark red, southern Sweden yellow, and Oslo a greenish yellow, as though the city still retained at least some memory of what a normal April was supposed to feel like.

“Judging from your later incident reports,” HESAYA finally said, “the training programs were introduced in time.”

In Adi’ra’s mind, a woman appeared on cold pavement.

Not her face. Just her sleeve.

Beside her, a stranger was pressing both hands onto a wound, his shoulders trembling with effort while someone nearby said the ambulance was almost there.

He had not stopped after the first minute, nor when blood soaked through the first layer of material, nor when his arms began to hurt.

Six months earlier, he had taken a course.

“They came just in time,” Adi’ra said.

“The emergency responders?”

Adi’ra closed the bag, the zipper tracing the edge with a dry rasp.

“Them too.”

HESAYA left the article open.

She did not ask again why it was in Adi’ra’s archive.

Not yet.

Adi’ra enlarged the weather map and studied the route. On Monday, they would leave — not for the first time, and not for unknown territory, but for the same roads, the same comparison sites, the same lakes and stretches of coastline that somehow became a little less the same every time they returned.

Inside them, the journey had begun long before the conscious I had spoken the decision aloud.

Perhaps it was always that way.

The body noticed first that the heat had become intolerable. Another part opened the maps, another began sorting equipment, and only at the very end did the internal press office finally step up to the microphone and announce:

“We leave Monday.”

The decision had been made.

The Ranger still sat closed up in the yard, its rooftop tent nothing more than a dark, flat silhouette behind the cab. Nothing had been packed yet, and not a single mile had been driven.

And yet the journey had already begun.

Chapter 2 — Who Is Thinking Inside Me When I Think of Myself as “I” or lifted their hands from the keyboard.

On the HoloWideScreen, the cursor was still blinking at the end of the last sentence.

Who is actually thinking inside me when I think of myself as “I” — or as “we”?

They read it a second time.

Then a third.

Outside, the wind had picked up.

The young leaves beyond the east-facing window moved more restlessly than they had an hour earlier, and somewhere in the garden, something kept knocking against wood at irregular intervals.

Clack.

A pause.

Clack.

Adi’ra noticed it.

Of course they noticed it.

The thermos was still sitting on the small table beside the Chesterfield sofa.

Too far away.

For a moment, they considered whether thirst was a sufficient reason to get up.

No.

A second later:

Yes.

And then:

You could just keep writing for another five minutes.

Adi’ra twisted their mouth.

“Oh, wonderful.”

The room did not respond.

Neither did the HomeAI.

Thankfully.

They leaned back and looked at the screen again.

PATTERN COLLECTION

CASE 0001

What had begun as a simple question had, within only a few pages, carried them farther and farther backward.

Before names.

Before gender.

Before language.

Before the first memory.

All the way into a body that did not yet know it would one day think of itself as an I.

Adi’ra had expected writing to produce answers.

Instead, every answer seemed to uncover another layer.

Genes were not the self.

The body alone was not the self.

Upbringing was not the self.

Memory was not the self either.

Even what they had thought of for decades as their personality appeared to be woven from influences, experiences, reactions, and decisions.

And yet someone was sitting here.

In 2040.

In this office.

Looking through this window.

Feeling thirsty.

Thinking about whether to stand up.

And experiencing every one of those thoughts as their own.

Adi’ra slowly raised an eyebrow.

But which one was theirs?

The desire for water?

The resistance to getting up?

The thought that had just noticed both desires existing at the same time?

Or the part observing the entire process and now trying to turn it into a pattern?

A short laugh escaped them.

“Oh, this is getting worse.”

“Would you like me to do something?” the HomeAI asked from somewhere in the room.

Adi’ra closed their eyes for a moment.

Of course.

“No.”

A brief pause.

“That was not a request.”

“Understood.”

Silence.

Adi’ra opened their eyes again.

Then they grinned.

Who, exactly, had just decided that the HomeAI should not help?

The thought remained.

The grin slowly faded.

Adi’ra pulled the keyboard closer and placed the cursor beneath the last question.

Perhaps the problem was not that several thoughts could arise inside one person at the same time.

Perhaps the more interesting question was why one of them eventually came to feel like “I.”

They began to write.

It took me forty-six years to begin understanding that I was not simply, and binarily, a man.

But neither was I on my way to becoming a binary woman.

I was not moving from one clearly defined pole toward another.

Instead, I began to recognize myself in a space the binary model has difficulty describing: a nonbinary intersection in which different aspects of the self can exist at the same time without being forced to collapse into a single, unambiguous state.

But how do I move from a singular image of myself — from the idea of one clearly bounded identity — toward a nonsingular experience of who I am?

I deliberately avoid treating this as a simple transition from one binary identity into another.

Because it would be too easy to confuse nonsingular with merely bi or binary.

Binary does not simply mean that more than one state exists.

It means that exactly two states are allowed.

Zero or one.

Man or woman.

One or the other.

Within such a system, a person may move from one state to the other, but each state remains singular and clearly defined.

Even a transition from one pole to the other does not necessarily leave the binary system behind.

It may simply change one’s position within it.

But that is not what describes me.

I did not simply move from zero to one.

I realized that I do not fully exist within a system that recognizes only zero and one.

So what does it mean when I speak of myself as we?

Does it mean I hear voices?

That several separate personalities live inside me?

That my experience is the expression of a psychiatric disorder?

No.

My we is not dissociative identity disorder.

It does not consist of separate personality states taking turns in control, cut off from one another’s experiences or memories.

I do not lose myself to some stranger within me.

I experience myself from several directions at once.

The we I am describing is neither an illness nor some inflated perception of myself.

It is an attempt to give language to an inner complexity for which the ordinary word I has sometimes become too narrow.

I am a we because I am neurospicy.

Because I am queer.

Because I am not made from one perfectly consistent, contradiction-free core.

I am made from experiences, roles, conditioning, bodily sensations, needs, memories, and movements of thought.

I am the product of many parts.

And even the word product is inadequate.

Those parts are not simply added together and transformed into one smooth whole.

They relate to one another.

They reinforce one another.

They contradict one another.

They change one another’s meaning.

And depending on the situation, some become louder while others recede into the background.

Several lines of thought often run through me at once.

I can understand a situation emotionally while analyzing it at the same time.

I can understand another person and still reject their behavior.

I can seek safety while demanding freedom.

I can perform a role exceptionally well while knowing that the role does not fully describe me.

These inner movements are not merely two opposing voices.

They are a network.

Some thoughts speak from experience.

Others from fear.

Some from logic.

Others from empathy, memory, bodily knowledge, or from a vague discomfort that cannot initially explain itself but later develops into a recognizable analysis.

They all belong to me.

And precisely because they all belong to me, none of them alone has the right to determine who I am.

«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»

The Inner Council Convenes Over Toast

Sometimes the workings of this inner we become clearest in the most trivial decisions imaginable.

It is late.

I have barely eaten all day, and I have just spent four uninterrupted hours working on my MacBook.

Deep in the tunnel, I have largely ignored the signals coming from my body.

The cautious, controlling part of me says:

You should probably just have one slice of toast with cheese.

Another part immediately bursts into the meeting:

Dude, I’m STARVING.

Oh hell yes, there’s still Nutella over there.

Fuck, you need that right now. The last four hours were brutal.

And the toaster holds two slices. Why are we negotiating with poverty here?

Then a third part speaks up.

It sounds sensible, but unlike the first one, it has also reviewed the actual supply situation.

The hunger is real.

You only had two small meals today. It’s late, and you’ve just spent four hours straight on the MacBook.

Because you were in the tunnel, you ignored the physical signals.

Honestly, four slices would still be completely reasonable.

Just don’t inhale all four of them immediately.

So here’s the deal: start with two slices with cheese.

Then wait about fifteen minutes.

Put the other two out already.

If you’re still hungry after the first two, make the next pair with Nutella.

That sounds reasonable.

It is not deprivation.

It is not loss of control.

It is a negotiated plan.

The cautious part gets its cheese first.

The exhausted, pleasure-seeking part gets the promise of Nutella.

And the analytical part has taken the actual condition of the body into account and negotiated a compromise.

My stomach votes in favor of the motion with a growl.

Two hours later, my wife comes home, walks into the kitchen, and calls out:

“Uh… did you forget those slices of toast, or are they for me?”

I had not exactly forgotten them.

My ADHD had simply discovered something else that promised faster, newer, or more interesting dopamine than Nutella.

The inner council had passed a perfectly sensible resolution.

But attention had already left the meeting.

«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»

Order in the Microchaos

This inner we does not appear only in short negotiations between hunger, reason, pleasure, bodily awareness, and attention.

It also shapes the way I organize everyday life — or fail to organize it in the way another part of me desperately needs.

I want things to have a fixed order.

Beside my usual place on the sofa is a storage area for the mobile computers I use most often: MacBook, iPad, and their accessories.

Everything is supposed to have its place.

That is the autistic part of me.

One glance at the storage area, however, immediately reveals several other forces at work:

ADHD.

Impulsivity.

Shifting attention.

And the deeply established habit of putting something down wherever my hand happens to release it.

The result looks like pure chaos.

Within a very small space, objects constantly change position.

Cables, pens, adapters, and devices disappear into a kind of microchaos that may look harmless to someone else but regularly drives me close to despair.

Drawers work much the same way.

Certain things I place in exactly the same drawer almost compulsively.

And heaven help anyone who replaces the cabinet, shelf, or drawer system while I am away.

I can become remarkably unpleasant when an internal order I depend on has been destroyed.

At the same time, I can regularly be heard swearing, complaining, and cursing because I cannot find the object I placed in the inner universe of that very drawer half an hour earlier.

But even here, autism and ADHD are not simply two opponents standing across from each other.

One part demands fixed locations.

Another puts things down impulsively.

A third tries to reconstruct the last action.

A fourth systematically scans the visible area.

A fifth grows increasingly angry as time pressure builds.

Another begins to doubt that the object is even in the drawer, despite my absolute certainty that I put it there.

And yet another watches the entire spectacle in disbelief, wondering how an object can disappear from the universe of a single drawer in less than thirty minutes.

My inner we is not made of two opposing poles.

It forms shifting alliances.

While I am still moving between drawer, storage area, and a reconstruction of my last few movements, my wife calls from her office:

“Honey, are you on the phone? Or who are you arguing with?”

Uff.

Fuck.

Have parts of my internal system quietly taken control of my body as well?

Has one of them decided that the debate no longer needs to remain internal and simply started broadcasting fragments of it aloud?

Apparently so.

What escapes me next is an insane little giggle.

At least, that is what my wife calls it.

My internal government has apparently not only forgotten to switch off the microphone.

It has also failed to prepare an agreed press statement.

One part was searching.

One was remembering.

One was questioning the memory.

One was commentating on the failure.

One was swearing.

And another suddenly found the entire situation so absurd that it started laughing before I had even decided how I wanted to answer my wife.

No foreign personality had taken control of my mouth or my body.

But thought, self-talk, frustration, language, and physical reaction are sometimes connected so closely in me that the boundary between inside and outside briefly becomes permeable.

In that moment, my inner we had moved faster than my conscious I.

«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»

A Layered Self

Perhaps the singular I is less singular than our language suggests.

Perhaps every human being says I even though countless influences, relationships, needs, memories, and inner movements are already gathered inside that word.

In me, that multiplicity is particularly easy to perceive.

Not as hearing voices.

Not as fragmentation.

Not as several separate people.

But as the conscious experience of several perspectives existing simultaneously within one continuous self.

My we, then, is not the plural of multiple personalities.

It is the grammatical form of a layered self.

A self that no longer wishes to pretend that only one thought, one gender, one role, one need, or one truth can exist at any given moment.

I am not either a man or a woman.

I am not either rational or emotional.

I am not either strong or vulnerable.

I am not either autonomous or connected.

And the forces inside me are not merely two clearly separated opposites fighting for control.

There are many participants in the negotiation.

They form coalitions.

They lose majorities.

They change position.

They react to new stimuli.

And sometimes the body simply overrules them all.

Some plan.

Others demand.

Some warn.

Others tempt.

Some remember.

Others question the memory.

And every now and then, attention simply walks out of the meeting while the carefully negotiated plan remains abandoned on the kitchen counter.

Perhaps that is precisely the quantum haze of my identity.

Not the absence of a self.

But a self that cannot be reduced to one clearly measurable state.

Not a rigid I sitting in some central control room, commanding every impulse.

But a living inner system whose parts contradict, complement, and correct one another — and together produce something that moves through the outside world as one person.

As I.

As we.

And that brings me to the next question:

Within this inner “we,” who decides which thought becomes “I”?

«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»

Chapter 3:
<div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{"nodeId":"b18b1d47-4696-4a33-ac81-a4123c12685e","caption":"Thursday, April 5, 2040 — Personal Reconstruction

First question: When did we start referring to ourselves as “we”?

Adi’ra watched the cursor blink for a few more seconds.

Then they began where every search for the self eventually has to begin.

At the beginning.

Who was I inside my mother’s body?

Or perhaps the better question was:

What was I there?

Was I simply a new combination of my father’s and my mother’s genetic material? A biological roll of the dice in which two ancestral lines met and produced something that had never existed in quite that form before?

Yes.

But that was only part of it.

It was not merely two people who came together in me. Entire biological histories converged there.

My parents carried traces of their own parents, and of the generations before them: physical traits, metabolic patterns, vulnerabilities, resilience, and countless genetic variations that did not determine who I had to become, but helped shape what I might become.

Perhaps I even carried biological aftereffects of crises and hardships that had taken place long before I existed.

Not memories in the human sense.

Not images, thoughts, or emotions somehow stored in my cells by my ancestors.

But perhaps molecular traces of earlier living conditions — subtle changes in the ways certain genes could be regulated.

I did not remember the lives of the people who came before me.

But my body did not begin without a history.

As I developed inside my mother, my brain was not forming in isolation, nor was it unfolding according to some fixed and immutable blueprint.

Genes opened possibilities. They shifted probabilities, influenced sensitivities, and helped prepare neural pathways.

At the same time, I was developing inside another human being, sustained by her body and influenced by her metabolism, her hormones, her immune system, and the conditions of her life.

So, even before I could become an I, I was already part of a relationship.

The way I would later perceive, feel, and think emerged from an extraordinarily complex interplay.

My genes did not decide, on their own, that I would be autistic, or that autistic and ADHD-related ways of perceiving and thinking would one day intertwine within me.

But they were part of the conditions that made some developmental paths more likely than others.

That is how I became neurospicy.

Not because a single genetic switch was flipped one day.

Not because something went wrong in an otherwise normal blueprint.

But through the interaction of countless variations, regulatory processes, developmental conditions, and neural connections.

My brain was not wired incorrectly.

It simply became my — our? — brain.

And that raised a more difficult question.

If my body emerged from the biological histories of other people; if my neural development had already begun before birth, within and through my mother’s body; and if even my capacity to perceive the world arose partly from an inheritance that had started long before me—

was I ever only an individual?

Where does what is truly mine begin?

And where does what I inherited end?

Which parts of what I experience as my unique self also belong, in some way, to my parents, my ancestors, and the biological history of our species?

Who is this we inside me?

Perhaps I was never a single, clearly bounded point of origin.

Perhaps my self emerged instead from a convergence of relationships: two people, many generations, a maternal body, and a developmental history that had begun billions of years before I was born.

If that is true, then the I is not the opposite of the we.

Perhaps the I is simply one temporary form through which a we experiences itself.

I began as a community of cells before I had a body of my own.

I emerged from many people before anyone gave me a name.

And long before I could say the word I, I was already part of a we.

Human neurological development does not begin with a finished, clearly bounded self.

A newborn does not yet experience the world through the same categories adults use to distinguish self from environment, inside from outside, I from you.

There are sensations.

Needs.

Early forms of self-perception.

But the conscious, reflective self — the self that recognizes itself as a distinct person, gives itself a name, and places itself within the story of a life — develops gradually.

So perhaps the beginning is not a fully autonomous individual.

Perhaps the beginning is relationship.

My mother and I were already biologically two separate bodies.

But for my emerging experience, we initially formed a tightly interconnected system of nourishment, warmth, scent, voice, touch, protection, and response.

I could not survive unless another human being noticed my signals, interpreted them, and responded.

Before I even knew that I was an I, I began to know myself through a you.

And perhaps that is where the conscious self begins.

Not by separating itself from everyone else, but through the experience of being perceived by another person.

A child discovers something of its own face in the faces of the people who respond to it.

It learns which expressions are welcomed, which needs are answered, and which parts of itself are allowed to become visible.

It is given a name.

A language.

Roles.

Expectations.

It is told who it is long before it can decide whether that description is true.

Identity, then, does not arise from the body alone.

It also emerges through upbringing, relationships, culture, language, and the social categories available to us.

It is neither something we simply invent nor an immutable product of nature.

It develops in the tension between body, brain, self-perception, and the ways other people reflect us back to ourselves.

For some people, identity may align closely and almost effortlessly with the physical characteristics and social category assigned to them.

For others, it may not.

The body can be a foundation of identity without becoming its entire content.

A person may recognize themselves within the binary category they were given.

They may move away from it.

They may live somewhere between categories.

They may carry more than one within themselves at the same time.

Or they may discover that none of the available categories fully describes their experience.

Identity does not have to be pure.

It does not have to be perfectly unambiguous.

And it does not have to be completed once and for all.

It can continue to evolve.

Sometimes so gradually that the change is almost invisible.

Sometimes in sudden leaps.

Long periods of apparent stability can be interrupted by moments when old certainties collapse and the self begins to rearrange itself.

My own identity did not develop along a straight line either.

For almost five decades, I lived under a name and within a social category that described parts of me, but never contained all of me.

I functioned within it.

I took on roles and met expectations.

I was a husband, a son, a technician, a journalist, a caregiver, a protector — and many other things.

None of those things were false.

But none of them were the whole of me.

It was not until I was forty-nine that I became the self-determined person I called Ike Aaren.

And even then, no entirely new human being appeared.

I did not erase my past.

I did not replace one false self with a single true one.

What changed was something quieter, and much more fundamental.

I allowed parts of myself that had previously been separated, hidden, or left without language to become visible together.

I recognized myself as a we.

Not binarily and exclusively a man.

Not binarily and exclusively a woman.

Not some neat halfway point between two fixed poles.

But both.

More than one.

And, at the same time, neither one nor the other completely.

A fluid self in which different parts no longer had to fight for the right to be the single true core.

Perhaps self-determination, then, is not about finally discovering one perfectly unambiguous answer to the question:

Who am I?

Perhaps it is about being allowed to decide for yourself which answers can be true at the same time.

I am not less me because I experience myself as we.

My we is not the dissolution of my identity.

It is a more complete expression of it.

And once I had reached that thought, another question was already waiting.

This one could not be answered merely by looking backward at genes, bodies, names, or expectations.

It led somewhere else.

Somewhere inside.

Who is actually thinking inside me when I think of myself as “I” — or as “we”?

«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»

Teilen

Einen Kommentar hinterlassen

Jetzt abonnieren

Chapter 2:
<div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{"nodeId":"c2eea696-ad29-4182-a250-de330b338dd6","caption":"Wednesday, April 4, 2040 — 2040

Identity in the Quantum Haze is an ongoing near-future narrative following Adi’ra, a travelling researcher, journalist, and pattern seeker.

Set primarily in the year 2040, the story explores identity, neurodivergence, relationships, climate change, technology, journalism, and civilian resilience — not as separate subjects, but as systems that constantly interact with one another.

Personal experience becomes observation.

Observation becomes a question.

Questions become patterns.

And sometimes, a pattern opens another layer of the haze.

Identity in the Quantum Haze — Volume 1

The story unfolds through narrative scenes, personal reflections, logbook entries, and analytical case files.

This reading guide will grow as new chapters are published.

For the intended narrative sequence, begin with the three prologues.
<p style="text-align: 1 — Adi’ra and Kasandra

April 3, 2040 — 4:03 p.m.

A climate disaster flickers across the HoloScreen while everyday life continues inside a house in Glinde.

Then Adi’ra walks into the room and says something seemingly insignificant:

“We checked the bedding.”

Nana notices the word before Adi’ra does.

And a question begins to form.

Read Prologue 1:

<div class="digest-post-embed"
